Our call to serve with Japan Mission:

About 2 years ago, Gretchen and I felt God stirring our hearts to reach the nations with the gospel. In God’s providence, He led both my wife and I, at the same time, yet individually, to this calling.

Once we talked about this calling and what it could look like, we decided the best thing to do would be to wait and seek the Lord in this. Perhaps what we were feeling could be fleeting or simply emotional. So, we decided that to discern the Lord’s will in this we would seek Him in prayer, His Word, and wise counsel. So, for the next year, Gretchen and I sought the Lord to see what He would have us do and after a year, we both still felt the same conviction that we had initially to reach the nations.

So, the next step was to ask the question, “If God IS calling us to go, then where?” And so, we began our research on the needs around the world. We looked at many places all around the world and sought His guidance.

The Lord eventually revealed two major desires in our hearts regarding overseas missions. First, we longed to reach unreached peoples. Second, while we believe Christ is worthy to be proclaimed everywhere, we also felt a concern for safety with a baby girl on the way. In short: unreached peoples and safety. It was then that we noticed Japan has both of those things. The second most unreached place in the world and yet very safe. So, we began to heavily consider Japan.

As we began to consider Japan, we did a lot of online research of what Japan was like and what the needs were. We talked to many different mission’s agencies working in Japan and multiple different missionaries. All the people and organizations we talked to were helpful, but did not find an organization we felt God was leading us to.

Then, in May of 2024, Gretchen and I went to visit Japan on a self-led trip. We went to church, went to the grocery, spoke to locals, took care of the baby, and traveled around to get an idea what it would look like to maybe live there one day. When we were there, we connected with one mission organization and that was Japan Mission. I had read about them on their website, read a book they published, and corresponded with Alex Verwey to meet-up on our trip.

We weren’t exactly sure how it would go but we were open to what the Lord might show us. When we connected with Japan Mission, we were taken back by the hospitality and kindness we were shown. They were genuine and thoughtful towards people they had never met before. Needless to say, there was a good first impression. During our time with Japan Mission, we got to meet the team, sit in on a team prayer, join kinder care, as well as a couple English classes.

While, it was all very different from what we are used to in the States, we were very interested and excited for what God was doing through Japan Mission to reach the Japanese. We were also interested if God were planning to use us as a part of Japan Mission. After our trip, Gretchen and I continued to seek the Lord for what He would have us do and constantly asked that if He would have us join Japan Mission that He would open a door.
