Joy Club - English Outreach

The Opportunity

Over the years, English Evangelism has proven to be an effective means of outreach. One survey showed that 40% of pastors made their first contact with Christianity through an English class!

Students, who would not normally attend church, come to learn English and make friends with a foreigner. They range in age from 3 to 83. In order to improve their English, students have to come back repeatedly. Each time they return, they hear the Gospel, because every English class ends with a Bible Time.

It is often followed by a cup of tea. This presents an informal opportunity for teachers and fellow believers to interact with the students. Teachers also invite students to attend the Sunday worship service, and there they are befriended by other believers from the local community. Teachers in Japan are often given a place of honor and students are obligated to show respect. All of these things help teachers gain the respect of students, while regularly sharing the Gospel and building long-lasting friendships.

English Evangelism teachers currently minister at about 20 locations throughout the Osaka area, which has a population of 23 million people! Teachers have the opportunity to interact with over 300 students weekly! The Lord has blessed the Mission with a wonderful team of dedicated English teachers. Their responsibilities include sharing from the Word, singing, distributing literature, counseling and building friendships. Pray as they use various means to help churches reach their local communities for Christ.

One woman started studying English in our English Evangelism Program about 18 years ago. She dropped out for two years. She then faced some serious problems that seemed to have no solution. She went back to church and found the answers to her problems while learning more about the Bible in English class. She later became a Christian, was baptized, and is now a faithful believer in that church!
